Here are our five top tips to help you stay prepared. 

1. Check Your Heating Oil Levels 

Keep an eye on your heating oil tank and, wherever possible, aim to maintain a minimum of 500 litres. Keeping a sensible reserve can give you extra peace of mind during periods of high demand, bad weather or unexpected delivery delays. 

2. Order Your Heating Oil in Good Time 

Don't wait until your tank is almost empty before placing your next order. Planning ahead helps you avoid the last-minute rush during colder weather and gives you greater flexibility when arranging a delivery. Keep an eye on your fuel levels and order early to help ensure you're ready for the coldest days. 

3. Keep Your Heating System Winter Ready 

Make sure your boiler is serviced before winter sets in, and check that your oil tank, access points and associated equipment are safe, accessible and in good condition. Regular maintenance can help your heating system run safely and efficiently, while reducing the risk of unexpected breakdowns when you need your heating most. 

4. Know Where to Find Support 

If you're concerned about managing your heating oil costs or keeping your tank topped up, speak to WCF Chandlers about the options and advice available to you. It's also worth checking whether you qualify for any government support schemes or independent advice services that can help with winter heating costs. 

5. Register for the Cold Weather Priority Scheme 

If you're aged 75 or over and rely on heating oil, check whether you're eligible to register for the UKIFDA Cold Weather Priority Scheme. Participating heating oil distributors can prioritise deliveries during periods of extreme cold weather or fuel shortages. If you have friends, family members or neighbours who may be eligible, encourage them to find out more too.
